DOCTOR STRANGE, Marvel’s latest cinematic, superhero offering, is a great launching off point to tackle the important question of philosophical naturalism, the belief that all that truly exists is what we can see, touch, taste, measure, etc. Many scientists today reject anything supernatural, not because of science (as they might claim), but because they are philosophical naturalists (or “materialists”). But broadly speaking, “Doctor Strange” takes us where the Bible takes us: into the reality of an unseen reality. As the Ancient One tells Strange: “You’re a man looking at the world through a keyhole. You’ve spent your whole life trying to widen that keyhole. To see more. To know more. And now on hearing that it can be widened, in ways you can’t imagine, you reject the possibility…You think you know how the world works? You think that this material universe is all there is? What is “real”? What mysteries lie beyond the reach of your senses?” Amen! God’s word, not magic, widens that keyhole. Hope you can encourage your superhero-loving kids with these thoughts.
